"We took Sydney to the vet the first weekend of September for what we thought was a sprain or fracture in his front leg. After completing Xrays the vet delivered some really bad news. Yes he had a fracture, but not your typical fracture. It was a pathologic fracture due to a bone tumor near his carpal joint. "As you know, Bubba was diagnosed on October 3 with an anaplastic high grade carcinoma of the lung. We had this tumor surgically removed, and then began him on Tumexal. We took Bubba for his 60 day checkup yesterday. His weight has remained contant at 25.5 lbs and his energy level has been great. The science behind   Tumexal™ 

Virtually all human and canine cancers have mutations in what are called tumor suppressor genes.  In particular, the p53 tumor suppressor  (or one of its immediate downstream effectors) has been shown to be inactivated in virtually all human and canine tumors. The p53 tumor suppressor protein serves critical functions in inhibiting cell division and DNA synthesis. Uncontrolled cell division and DNA synthesis are the very basis of tumor growth. p53 prevents a cell from moving forward in the cell cycle and replicating its DNA until all of its DNA has been checked for damage and that damage repaired. p53 also detects when the DNA damage cannot be completely repaired, and directs such cells to undergo a process called apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Both of these functions- inhibiting DNA synthesis until all DNA damage has been repaired, and directing cells to die when the damage is too great to be repaired- prevent the development and growth of cancerous tumors. When mutations occur in p53, these functions are lost and cells rush forward through the cell cycle, replicating their genomes without regard for damaged DNA. The result is an accelerating rate of mutation which feeds the growth, metastasis, and   drug resistance capacity of tumors.

 Tumexal™ is a remarkable new treat-ment  for cancer in dogs that restores p53 tumor suppressor activity that has been lost in cancer cells. Tumexal™ does this by inhibiting the same effector proteins that p53 would inhibit, and activating the same effector proteins that p53 would activate had its function not been destroyed as part of the cancer process. Once p53's neglected tasks are assumed by Tumexal™, tumors not only stop growing, but undergo apoptosis-programmed cell death.  Tumexal™ is also remarkable for its lack of harmful side effects. Unlike standard chemotherapy drugs that can significantly reduce the quality of life in a treated dog, Tumexal™ is virtually toxicity free because of its novel mechanism of action. Nevertheless, it should be noted that after very long term usage of Tumexal™, some anemia (the destruction of red blood cells) may occur. Therefore, dogs on very long term treatment with Tumexal™ should not be put under anesthesia as  drugs that induce unconsciousness could further compromise oxygen transport and lead to anoxia.
